Klaus (movie)

Rating: 7.0/10.0
- “Gritty” origin story for Santa Claus.
- Very good for a kid’s holiday movie, which is a difficult genre.
- Beautiful animation in a traditional style. It is clearly modeled after Disney Renaissance films, but this movie actually looks much better than Aladdin, Little Mermaid, etc.
- Reminded me of The Emperor’s New Groove, particularly the protagonist. Jason Schwartzman was very David Spade-like, though less evil. The Emperor’s New Groove was much funnier.
- The strong elements were:
- The suffering of the postal worker.
- The Klaus character finding meaning after the death of his wife.
- The aesthetics of the town and the toy building.
- The hopeful message that toxic environments can be improved.
- The weak elements were:
- The school teacher was too disconnected from the main plot.
- The motives of the antagonists were unbelievable to me. Also, they were too ineffectual to be interesting.
- The music was too contemporary, and meshed poorly with the look of the film.
