I was surprised by how dated the animation looked. It reminded me of a cut-scene from a video game. This movie is quite crude, with lots of burping and farting. I enjoyed the relationship between Shrek and Donkey, but I saw that as better writing than performances. Shrek see’s himself as having layers like an onion, but I only heard one note in the Mike Myers characterization. Eddie Murphy was also deliberately and successfully annoying. The best performance is probably John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. I enjoyed his scenes with the gingerbread man and the magic mirror. Ultimately, the fair tale characters had very little significance to the story. Also, if the film were realistic, I think Fiona would be very unhappy being trapped in ogre form forever.
